What Is Glaze And What Is It Used For When Finishing Wood Work?
Print This Article
Glaze colors the wood much like stain does. The difference is that stain is applied to the raw wood and penetrates into the wood fibers. Glaze on the other hand is coloring that is added after the wood has been sealed.
Glazing works well to get light colors. It starts to look chunky when applied in thick coats to get a darker color.
Glazing works best when combined with staining. See the creating a distressed wood finish – part 1 and distressed wood finishing – part 2 for examples of how effective the combination can be.
Creating a specific color of glazing is best achieved by starting with a clear glazing base and then adding pigmented stain to it. Don’t use pigmented dyes.
Apply glazing with a brush or pad. Use a cotton rag to remove it to get the desired color. Once it is dry use your desired top coat to seal and protect the glaze.
