How To Mark / Draw Lines On Dark Wood?
Rose asks, “Where can I purchase a pencil that writes white for marking wood projects?”
Making pencil marks that you can see on dark wood is difficult at best. The problem is that graphite, a.k.a pencil lead, does not show up very well when written on a dark wood. What to do?
Well, I have a few different options for you.
Some office supply stores carry maps pencils that contain a white pencil. You can also try some of the lighter color map pencils like the yellow, light green. First test them out on a scrape piece of wood by making a line on a scrape piece of wood and then try to erase it. You don’t want to make permanent lines with the map pencil.
Another option is to put down a line of blue painter’s masking tape on the wood where you will be cutting. Take your pencil and draw the cut line on top of the blue masking tape. The pencil contrasts nicely with the masking tape. Make the cut and peel off the masking tape.
I would not use the regular white masking tape because the adhesive is stickier and tends to leave a residue on the wood. This will affect the finish that you apply to the wood.
