How To Lower The Gloss Of Polyurethane Varnish?
Angele writes, “I just had some wooden shutters installed and the finish is too shiny is there something that can be done to take away some of the shine?”
Polyurethane varnish comes in three different standard luster’s high gloss, semi gloss and satin same as paint does. Unlike paint, the more coats of the varnish that are applied to the finished piece the stronger the luster of the finish will be. I am not aware of any quick and easy way to reduce the luster of already applied varnish.
Sanding the wooden shutters will remove some of the gloss polyurethane varnish. You could try to coat it with a satin varnish. However, the shutters will most likely still have a high sheen and luster to that if the satin polyurethane varnish where applied directly to the bare stained wood.
You would have to strip the varnish off of the shutters. Select the varnish that has the desired luster and apply it to the shutters. This is going to be a fair amount of work to strip and reseal the shutters. You can use any of the commercially available stripping solutions that are suitable for removing varnish. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and it should only remove the varnish and leave the stain in the wood.
