How to choose the right pocket hole screw

Just bought your first pocket hole jig and ready to start joining boards with pocket hole joinery?  The pocket hole jig kit may have come with a set of screws, mine came with twenty five.  Will these screws work for all different types of wood?

There are a few different styles of pocket hole screws.  Your local home improvement store may carry some of the different types.  My local home improvement stores have a very limited selection.  I end up purchasing my screws from online stores.

There are two thread types for pocket screws fine and course.  Use the fine threaded screws for hardwoods like oak and maple.  Use the course threaded screws for softwoods like pine, poplar and plywood.

There are two head styles washer and pan.  The washer head is good for softwoods and the pan head is for hardwoods.

Then there is screw length.  The screw length will depend on the application.  How thick is the material you are working on.  Joining two 3/4 pieces of wood use a 1 1/2 length screw.  You don’t want the screw to pop out of the end of the joined work piece.
