My first response to this question was how much weight will the caster need to carry? But then I decided to look into to it a bit more discovered that there are several factors that need to be considered and evaluated before being able to narrow down the list of casters the right one for your project.
1) Maximum weight
You need to determine the total weight that the casters will need to carry. The weight is also known as the ‘load capacity’. The load capacity is the sum total of the maximum weight of the caster multiplied by the number of casters on the project. Don’t under estimate the maximum load that the casters will be carrying. The result will be that the casters will not roll or will break.
2) Wheel size
Wheel size refers to both the diameter of the wheel and its width. Typically the larger the diameter of the wheel the easier it is to roll the project around. The larger the wheel’s diameter is it will be able to carry more weight. The width of the wheel also affects the overall caster load capacity.
3) How will the caster be attached to the project?
There are several different types of fastening systems for casters from top plate to a round stem. Much of this depends on the project. The project and where the casters will be placed will help determine which fastening system works best for you.
4) What surface will the project be rolled over?
It is necessary to select a wheel that is compatible with the flooring it will be rolling over. For example, it is not advisable to have a steel wheel caster mounted onto a 500 pound project that will be rolling on top of ceramic tile, unless you’re planning on replacing the tile.
5) In what environment will the caster be working in?
Will the caster be exposed to water, saw dust, metal shavings, or mud? Depending on how the project will be used will help determine if you need sealed bearings for the caster or not.
When selecting a caster there are several factors on keep in mind from the maximum load to the environment it will be working in. As always keep in mind the aesthetics of the caster and does it match with the project.
