The basic definition of a board foot is a measurement of the volume of wood, sort of. In its simplest form one board foot equals 144 cubic inches. Or a board that is twelve inches wide by twelve inches long and one inch thick. That is the simple definition.

When purchasing lumber at the local hardwood dealer some will price the lumber by the board foot. One of the local hardwood dealers sells both dimensional lumber and rough cut. The dimensional lumber has been planed down to standard thickness and widths. They sell it by the linear foot. The rough cut lumber is sold by the board foot.

If you don’t understand board foot measurements how will you be able to compare prices between hardwood dealers? You might think your getting a deal; when in actuality you are over paying.
